American Living Skills

Independent Living Skills program is designed to train and help adults with developmental disabilities to acquire functional skills to be more successful and independent at home and in the community.

Purpose & Goals

We believe that people with disabilities are the best experts on their needs. Therefore, they must take the initiative, individually and collectively, in designing and promoting better solutions and must organize themselves for political power. The purpose of our program is to encourage de-institutionalization from a group home setting to a less restricted independent living setting to empower consumers to exercise personal choices, control, and self-determination in their everyday lives. We will provide services that offer functional skills training necessary to secure a self-sustaining, independent living situation in the community. These skills will assist the consumer in achieving his/her desired level of independence, and in providing the support necessary to maintain those skills.

Mission Statement

It is our mission to advocate for the systemic development of quality community living services and assist individuals who are developmentally disabled to achieve their maximum potential for independence while guarding their rights so no resident would be coerced to do anything against his/her will. American Living Skills Independent Living Service is an approach, an ideology, and a community-based residential service for consumers with disabilities. The primary focus is to provide the necessary support for people to live an active and integrated life that is truly their own.

ILS Philosophy

ALS Independent Living Services’ philosophy assumes that a key indicator of life quality is that one can make choices regarding one's life and that the broader the scope of choices, the higher quality of life. With this assumption, the philosophy of ALS centers around supporting the people we serve to achieve their personal goals and aspirations.
